Every night at the KBS building open studio in Yeouido Seoul, the place becomes an exhibition hall of various races in the world. The path that leads from the building entrance to the radio booth is crowded with hundreds of fans from all over the world. It is an actual tourist attraction for foreign tourists and fan meetings take place there every night. This is a scene from a live broadcast of KBS 2FM(89.1Mhz) Super Junior's Kiss the Radio.

On August 21, it will have been 5 years since Leeteuk and Eunhyuk have been holding down the radio booth as DJs. It is hard to receive a perfect attendance award than to receive a honorary award. A radio DJ requires diligence. One also requires quick thinking and patience to communicate with listeners for 2 hours every day. That is the reason why radio departments avoid hiring members of idol group as DJs who have busy schedule and whose popularity is short lived. They endured 5 years among prejudices and worries. They have maintained their number one position in radio program rating for the same time slot and they have become the pride of the production staff.

Leeteuk requested an interview for the 5th year anniversary during a live broadcast of his program. To comply with his request, Sports Chosun went to Kiss the Radio's DJ booth.

I congratulate you early on your 5th year anniversary. Do you remember your first show?
Eunhyuk= I remember it clearly. I even remember what clothes that I wore that day. I guess the PD was nervous so we pre-recorded the first show. Every moment was amazing and nerve wracking. After it ended, I was exhausted.
Leeteuk= After starting the program, we thought we should discipline ourselves harshly for a week. So we chose guests that were difficult to handle.

Who were the guests?
Leeteuk= The guests were people who usually answer curtly or say something that's totally different... Yang Dong Geun and SG Wannabe sunbaenims are some of the guests that were memorable.

You have a special love for radio DJs.
Leeteuk= Since I was in elementary school, I grew up listening to radio programs such as Raise the volume and Starry Starry Night. I thought I would definitely want to be a radio DJ when I become a celebrity. But I didn't know I would do it for this long. I thought I would be lucky if I could do it for 2 or 3 years. As I was doing it, I think my desire grew bigger. I hope someone can dream by listening to my voice.
Eunhyuk= To the contrary, I never listened to the radio before becoming a DJ. I'm someone who discovered the charm of radio later on. At first, I thought the role of a DJ was to just laugh and talk. But now I know it's different. You have to know a lot about music and you have to be considerate toward the guests. I'm learning how difficult it is to communicate with listeners.

Many fans come to the studio for each live broadcast.
Leeteuk= In the beginning, mostly Korean fans came. As K-pop became popular, more fans from China, Japan and Southeast Asia came to the studio. Recently, there are a lot of fans from Europe or South America. I heard that the open studio has become a tourist attraction.
Eunhyuk= Sometimes, we use our own money to buy them snacks. We gave the fans ice cream yesterday. I heard that fans overseas who can't come to the open studio read translations to the program. I feel the responsibility of promoting Korean culture. I hope one day, we get to do a live broadcast overseas.

Was there any accidents during a broadcast ?
Leeteuk= Phone calls with listeners make me most nervous. On April fool's day, I was telling a listener's story about how she pranked her teacher and the story was explicit that I was sweating.
Eunhyuk= I was introducing an American pop song and I was humiliated because of my pronunciation. I introduced Anthem as Ahndam and I read "Party in the U.S.A." as "Party in the yooza" that I was made fun of for a while.

Is there any difficulty in meeting listeners every day?
Eunhyuk= Because I am a person too, it was difficult to pretend that I was happy in the booth even when I was going through a difficult time or was unhappy. Now, even if something bad happens in my personal life, I try to get good energy by hosting the radio program.
Leeteuk= The radio booth has become almost as comfortable as my house. Hosting is fun.

Did you face any crisis?
Leeteuk= April 19, 2007. When the members and I were driving somewhere, a car accident occurred. I was seriously injured. I had to leave my position as a radio DJ for exactly 33 days. When I was listening to the program in my hospital bed, I realized how important my job was as a DJ.
Eunhyuk= I missed Teukie hyung. When we finish a live broadcast, we say goodbye to the staff in front of the stairs. That day, we were in a hurry that we didn't say goodbye to them. Then the accident occurred. It was kind of a jinx. After that day, we say goodbye no matter what.

What do you think is the appeal of radio?
Leeteuk= TV is one way. Radio is two way. I think that's why more lonely or tired people listen to the radio than happy people. I think radio is like a refuge where it can listen to someone's story and console people.

You will celebrate your 5th year anniversary on August 21. Do you have any plans that day?
Leeteuk= I don't know if we can do a live broadcast because of our fifth album promotion. If it's possible, we want to randomly invite guests. Like saying, "celebrities who are listening to the radio right now, please come to the studio." We especially welcome girl groups. Haha.

Is there a guest that you want to invite?
Eunhyuk= Han Gain. I really like her. Please appear on the program. Haha.
Leeteuk= I think it will be fun if we invite the DJs of other radio programs from the same time slot. Jung Yup sunbaenim, Younha, and Lee Suk Hoon, you are reading this, right?

Lastly, is there anything else you would like to add?
Eunhyuk= I hope it remains as a program that communicates heart to heart. I hope it remains as a program that always gives people strength.
Leeteuk=(Pointing to the Golden Mouth which is given to DJs who host radio programs for 10 years) I really want to do this for 10 years. Even though I have to enter the army, after I am discharged from the army, I want to come back to Kiss the Radio.

Hallyu wave is expanding throughout the world

If H.O.T and Shinhwa were the ones who started the spread of Hallyu Wave in Asia, then Super Junior is the one that has allowed this Hallyu Wave to expand beyond Asia into the international arena. Leaving aside contributions and influences given to the Hallyu Wave by singers and groups who choose to venture into the American and European music industry, instead focusing solely on the groups who chose to present their stage locally (in Korea and Asia) in order to improve their popularity by using their influences, Super Junior is no doubt the leader (in both these aspects).

After debuting for nearly 6 years, Super Junior has based their developments in Korea, although they have released Japanese and Chinese albums, they have not gone to the extent of targeting a specific overseas market, SJ-M, their sub-unit’s activities started only much later, Super Junior’s development in Korea faces very stiff competition, as the rate where idols debut and subsequently gets replaced is so rapid, they too face the risk of getting replaced by a new generation of idol singers, (and because of this) Super Junior is not considered the number one group in the hearts of the people in Korea, as the best group to them may well be one of the other groups. However this group of youngsters who have fought hard in their home country, they have come to experience extremely high popularity in Asia and in the world by means of their individual charms and talents.

Their previous Asia tour concerts have always sold out and this has proven to people Super Junior’s formidable popularity, they subsequently allowed SMTown concert to be held in Paris and they have attracted countless screams, all these allowed people to see Super Junior with a new perspective, creating a miracle. <<Mr. Simple>> is the last album before Leeteuk, Heechul and Yesung enlist in the army, and in addition to SJ’s popularity, the release of this album has attracted extensive attention. The press conference that was held in conjunction with the release of the album attracted more than 100 different news media with 170 reporters present for the interview, it is an unprecedented occurrence. As a reference figure, a press conference held for the release of an album by one of the first line singers would usually see about 10-15 news media attending. Apart from the reporters, fans from all over the world also came to the press conference location, with banners reading “The Return of the Superior”, and among these fans, there were also European fans who have travelled a considerable distance and this once again showed the influence that Super Junior has in the global stage. Super Junior’s press conference was also relayed live simultaneously through Faceboook, Youtube and other renown websites and this kind of scale (of promotion) is something that cannot be achieved by previous singers who were releasing their albums.

Despite everything said, a singer’s popularity requires the support of album sales, and in this aspect, Super Junior would never be lacking. Since the release of their new song, the album’s title song has swept first place in all the major Korean music sites, at the same time the online popularity of their song did not affect the physical album sales, new album <<Mr. Simple>> was released simultaneously in 11 different countries, and in order to fulfill fans’ enthusiastic response, all major Korean music stores have created a special section (in the store) equipped with individual checkout counters specially for the sales of Super Junior’s album. Since the release of the album, the albums are sold at an average of 10000 copies per day for the past week displaying explosive popularity and exceptional sales, and this kind of sales volume is something that certain singers won’t be able to achieve even over a period of one year.

Successes and experiences that cannot be reproduced

As the saying goes “Rome was not built in a day”, the accomplishments and popularity that is achieved by Super Junior is not something that can be obtained overnight, but instead, it is a result of their continuous strive and hard work, their successes and experience is something that cannot be duplicated / copied.

As a group who has debuted for nearly six years, (they are the) core of the entertainment industry, during this six years, Super Junior has established a very good network within the industry, to the extent where upon the release of their 5th album, various artists have come forward to show their support, and among these artists it includes SNSD, f(x), SHINee, DBSK which are members of the same company, there is also their close friends such as Defconn, Mighty Mouth, and on top of that there is actor Shin Eun Kyung, composer Joo Young Hoon, all these supports have come to prove Super Junior’s good relationship with others.

Family and fans’ support is one of the motivations for them to continue to go forward, and in the new albums’ “thanks to”, some members were very concise while some wrote lengthy paragraphs to express their deep gratitude towards those people that have given them strength, Leeteuk, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun and Shindong’s long and complete “thanks to” entries expressed their gratitude to everyone beginning from their company managements all the way down to ELF and everyone around them; Heechul who has the best connection (in the industry)summarised all his friends in one line; Donghae who is the most soft-hearted member, wrote a letter to his late dad; the kind hearted Sungmin used several different languages (in his thanks to) showing his consideration towards fans from all over the world, Siwon continued to portray his strong religious qualities while Yesung who has become more and more humorous used Miss & Mr. completing his thanks to in a single line, Eunhyuk on the other hand made himself the best “present” to repay all his fans*

What is more commendable is the fact that, to repay fans’ gratitude, Super Junior members are not only talking about it, just like how leader Leeteuk named their fans Ever Lasting Friends, they treat their fans with sincerity just like how they would treat their friends. They would communicate with their fans through twitter and other social networking sites, members and fans maintain a good level of communication, and during this time’s comeback, with regards to fans that waited and supported them under the blistering hot weather, the members paid out of their own pockets to purchase cold drinks for the fans, showing their care towards their fans, this considerate way of treating fans is not something that all artists can do, and this is also why there are more and more fans who would willingly support them.

The friendship between the members is equally precious, for a group who has so many members, yet able to cooperate in a coordinated and unanimous manner, the communication and understanding between members is a very crucial point, the heartwarming interactions between the members, and the determination not to separate despite differences in opinion, allowed people to see that this group will be able to make it far. Also, we were able to see that the active members have not forgotten Hangeng who has already left the group, Kangin who is currently serving in the army and Kibum who is temporarily absent, just as it was shown during the comeback stage, during the song <<Superman>> they sang: Super Junior are thirteen stars. “13” is a number that is everlasting for Super Junior, whether or not the members are by each other’s side.

Last weekend was Super Junior’s 5th full length album Mr. Simple’s first week on first place of the (music programme) charts, title song Mr. Simple has swept various main stream music charts with a whirlwind like manner. Super Junior not only returned to Mnet <<M!Countdown>> for the first time after a long absence, they were also crowned first place (during that programme), and in KBS’s <<Music Bank>> and MBC’s <<Music Core>>, Super Junior who has immense popularity also topped the charts taking home the trophy **. Super Junior’s new era has arrived once again!

* he only wrote “go anchovies” so I’m not sure how this relates to that.
** Music Core does not give out awards. Mr. Simple currently have won first place on MuBank and M!Countdown

By JONATHAN M. HICAP
August 5, 2011, 11:34am
MANILA, Philippines – Super Junior’s new and fifth album, “Mr. Simple,” will be the group’s last album before leader Leeteuk enlists in the military for his two-year mandatory service.

This was revealed during the boy band’s press conference on August 4 in Seoul in connection with the release of the album.

At 28, Leeteuk is ready for military service. Last year, he said that he might enlist in the end of 2011 or early 2012.

He will be the second member of Super Junior to enlist. Last year, Kangin entered the military.

With the military service looming, Leeteuk said that they will be embarking on a world tour, aiming to do concerts not just in Asia but in South America and the US.

In the last three years, Super Junior has held their Asia tour, visiting countries like the Philippines and China.

Today, Super Junior will hold their first TV performance of the title track “Mr. Simple” on KBS “Music Bank” and fans are eagerly awaiting their comeback after more than one year.

During the press conference, Leeteuk said they felt pressured because of the new album.

“Top of the K-pop! Leader of Global Korean Wave! Super Junior came back with fifth album ‘Mr. Simple’ in approximately 1 year and 2 months. We felt pressure while preparing the fifth album but I believe those pressures will change to expectations by receiving love from our fans,” he said.

Sungmin said he appreciates all the support from fans from different countries.

“We know that a lot of fans from various countries are cheering for us. We sincerely appreciate for all the support,” he said.

Eunhyuk  added, “I think we are making the comeback with great expectation from public so we are also very excited.”

Asked to describe “Mr. Simple”, Leeteuk said the song “expresses the best strength of Super Junior. Some people say that the song is similar to 'SORRY, SORRY' or 'BONAMANA' but if you listen to entire song, you will realize the difference and unique concept of 'Mr. Simple'.”

The album contains 13 songs and Yesung said his favorite is “Memories” “because all members participated for this song.”

On the other hand, Donghae, who wrote “Y”, admitted that the lyrics were “about the love story which I personally experienced.”

Overall, Heechul described the new album as “very charming, like the good looks of our members.”

In the end, Super Junior thanked the fans for eagerly awaiting the release of “Mr. Simple”.

“We would like to thank all the people who waited for our album. There is a saying in Asia, 'running horse never stops its horseshoe.' Like the saying, we will never stop performing! We will present our stages for 24 hours, 365 days a year! We'll do our best for the 5th album!”

Super Junior's album tops charts

By JONATHAN M. HICAP
August 2, 2011, 3:33pm

MANILA, Philippines - Thousands of fans waited last night for the release "Mr. Simple," the fifth album of boy band Super Junior that has already topped different real-time music charts in Korea.

On music site Dosirak, 10 songs in the album occupied the top ten positions. On Bugs and Daum, the track “Mr. Simple” also occupied the No.1 spot. On Naver and Melon music charts, “Mr. Simple” landed at No. 2.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the album, with SM Entertainment teasing them by releasing photos and the music video teaser. "Mr. Simple" contains 13 tracks—among them “Mr. Simple,” “Be My Girl,” “Opera,” “Walkin’,” “Y,” “Good Friends,” and the title track.

SM Entertainment said that the song “Mr. Simple" expresses how modern people "lose their achievement for their job, love and dream without breadth of mind in such a complicated world, with humorous and metaphorical words.”

The agency told fans to expect an intense and energetic performance from Super Junior when they start promoting on TV music shows.

Super Junior member Donghae composed “Y,” an R&B song that “expresses the emotional downfall caused by a break-up.”

On the other hand, “Good Friends” is about friendship in Super Junior while “Opera” tells the story of Super Junior being global stars.

Super Junior will hold a press conference on Aug. 4 to formally announce their comeback and answer questions from fans all over the world. The event will be streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

Super Junior announced their comeback with a fifth album on Thursday to some 200 international press members gathered at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Nonhyeon-dong, southern Seoul.

The new album, containing the track “Mr. Simple,” was released Wednesday in 11 countries. The teaser of the title track exceeded 1 million views on YouTube in just two days since it was unveiled on Tuesday, proving the long anticipation of the fans during the K-pop group’s more than year-long hiatus.

The boy band has been leading the recent K-pop craze worldwide. Other than participating in the first ever “SM Town in Paris” concert in June, the group recently finished its third Asia tour concert “Super 3”in 13 Asian cities. Their last title song, “Miina” topped Taiwan’s KKBOX for 61 consecutive weeks. Mirroring the popularity, press members from many Asian countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and China as well as South Korea attended the press conference.

“We realize that we are making a comeback in a much bigger spotlight than before. It is burdensome but also exciting,” said Eunhyuk, a member of the K-pop group.

The new album includes 13 songs of various genres like dance, pop ballad and R&B created by acclaimed composers and song writers such as Yoo Young-jin, Yoon Jong-shin, Kenzie and hitchhiker. The music video of “Mr. Simple” premiered at the press conference.

“The song maximizes Super Junior’s strong points. Some may think that it is similar to ‘Sorry Sorry’ and ‘Miina,” but it has a different charm once you hear it all. The point of the song is its lyrics. Many scary and difficult things happen these days. We hope the song can give you positive energy and help you keep things simple,” said Lee Teuk, leader of the group.

The group said it is planning to hold more shows in different countries with the new album to get closer with its increasing number of fans.

“We are planning on a world tour this time, not an Asia tour. We’d like to hold a concert in South America where we recently almost went but failed, and also in New York, our final goal, not by the name of SM Town but as Super Junior. If we could, we would also like to hold a show in Pyongyang,” said Lee, adding that he feels as if the group were a member of the national team.

The press conference, which included a Q&A session with international fans that sent in questions through UCC and Facebook, was broadcast live online.
